CALIFORNIA: Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio announced on February 12 that the original God of War trilogy is being remade, reviving the series’ Greek era in a project the studio said is still in very early development. The announcement was made during a PlayStation State of Play presentation and was accompanied by a message from Santa Monica Studio asking for patience, saying it will be some time before more information can be shared. Sony did not disclose a release date, platform list, pricing, or gameplay footage for the trilogy remake.

The original God of War launched on PlayStation 2 in March 2005, introducing Kratos and establishing the franchise’s mythological action format. The Greek saga continued with God of War II in 2007 on PlayStation 2 and concluded with God of War III in 2010 on PlayStation 3, before the series later shifted to a Norse setting in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.
Santa Monica Studio confirmed that T.C. Carson, who voiced Kratos in the Greek era, was involved in the remake announcement. Beyond confirming the remake and describing its development status as early, the studio did not provide additional production details or a release window, and it did not specify whether the remake will cover only the three numbered games or include other entries connected to the Greek storyline.
Greek trilogy remake confirmed
Alongside the remake announcement, Sony revealed and released God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D action platformer for PlayStation 5. The title launched the same day as the State of Play presentation and was developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, according to PlayStation’s announcement.
Sony described Sons of Sparta as a canon story set during Kratos’ youth while training at the Spartan agoge alongside his brother Deimos. Santa Monica Studio said the game’s writing team includes staff who worked on God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, and that Carson returns in the project as the adult version of Kratos serving as the story’s narrator.
Sons of Sparta available now
In outlining gameplay, Sony said Kratos uses a spear and shield and can wield divine artifacts referred to as the Gifts of Olympus to fight a range of enemies. The studio also said the game includes returning elements from earlier entries recreated in 2D, with hand-drawn pixel animation and new creatures drawn from Greek mythology.
Sony said God of War: Sons of Sparta is available digitally on PlayStation 5 in two editions. The standard edition is priced at $29.99, with regional pricing listed at €29.99, £24.99, and ¥3480, while the digital deluxe edition is priced at $39.99, with regional pricing listed at €39.99, £32.99, and ¥4480. – By Content Syndication Services.
